According to time.com, the habit of married couples giving and receiving specific marriage anniversary gifts—especially for 25th and 50th occasions—appears to have emerged from 18th century Germany.
It didn’t really take off elsewhere until the 19th century. It gained a kind of official recognition only in the 20th century when the American National Retail Jewellers Association considered a more formal adoption of the practice at their 1922 meeting.
